NYT cites UCSF cardiologist on cardiac-device limitations

A September 15 New York Times article, which focuses on new reports of disparate patient outcomes for cardiac defibrillators, includes commentary by UCSF cardiology professor Rita Redberg, MD. New research published in the September 14 Archives of Internal Medicine indicates that defibrillators do not appear to benefit women with congestive heart failure, despite success in the male patient population. Redberg wrote an accompanying editorial in Archives, underscoring the need for women and minorities to be better represented in clinical trials.
