Bloomberg News quotes Margaret Wallhagen, PhD, director of the UCSF John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, in a July 20 story about the expected strain on resources that will result from the rising number of elderly people worldwide. The article cites a new report from the National Institute on Aging that predicts a doubling in the number of people older than 65 in the next 30 years. Wallhagen, who is a UCSF professor of physiological nursing, comments on how changes in family structure in developing countries will compound problems in caring for the elderly.
